UPV, UP CIDS holds roundtable discussion on sustainable governance solutions for the integrative development of urban areas

In celebration of the 77th year of UP presence in Iloilo, UP Visayas (UPV) — through the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development and the Urban Studies Program of the UP Center for Integrative Development Studies (UP CIDS) as lead convenor—held a roundtable discussion (RTD) on sustainable governance solutions for the integrative development of urban areas at the GCEB Training Rooms, UP Visayas, Iloilo City campus, on October 23, 2024.

The roundtable discussion was organized to engage stakeholders in dialogue and to seek collective solutions to policy problems. The discussion aims to contribute to national development and knowledge creation. 

The roundtable discussion was attended by LGU and barangay officials from Oton, representatives from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environmental Management Bureau Region VI (DENR-EMB), the Iloilo City Engineer’s Office, the Homeless People’s Federation Philippines, Inc. (HPFPI), the Department of the Interior and Local Government Region 6, GREENPEACE Iloilo, and the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Iloilo City. Participants from UP Cebu and staff of UP CIDS joined online.

The resource persons included Dr. Eing Ming Wu, visiting professor at the UP National College of Public Administration and Governance and Senior Managing Advisor of Edu-Connect Southeast Asia Association in Kaohsiung, Taiwan; EnP Marlon Ladia, LGOO V and focal person for WaSH and the preparation of the Municipal Water Supply and Sanitation Master Plan at the Department of the Interior and Local Government Region 6; Engr. Shiela Mae R. Portillo, chief of the Ambient Monitoring and Technical Services Section at DENR EMB Region 6; Ms. Rizza Daphet C. Catage, chief of the Ambient Water Quality Monitoring Unit at DENR EMB Region 6; on behalf of Mr. Adel Al Karis L. Lumagod, Regulatory and External Affairs Head of Boracay Water in Malay, Aklan, is Ms. Joanna Intas, Technical Operations Head of Boracay Water; and Mr. Alan Muscoso, representative of the project entitled "Revitalizing an Urban River: The Stakeholder Engagement in Improving the Water Quality of the Iloilo-Batiano River Basin.”

The resource persons shared their experiences, reports, and recommendations on the topics of the municipal water supply and sanitation master plan, Iloilo River systems, Boracay Water as a sustainability partner for Boracay Island, and the presentation of results from the project entitled “Revitalizing an Urban River: The Stakeholder Engagement in Improving the Water Quality of the Iloilo-Batiano River Basin” at UP Visayas.

Earlier in the program, Chancellor Clement C. Camposano delivered his welcome message. Dr. Rosalie Arcala-Hall, Executive Director of UP CIDS and a faculty member in the Division of Social Sciences at the College of Arts and Sciences, UP Visayas, provided a brief background on the UP CIDS program and the rationale for the roundtable discussion. Meanwhile, Dr. Rhodella A. Ibabao, Project Leader of the UP Visayas Iloilo Team, Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development, and a faculty member in the Department of Management at the College of Management, UP Visayas, shared that the discussions in the RTD would form part of the study results.
