UPV strengthens curriculum development through OBE lecture-workshop

To further strengthen its curriculum development and continuously enhance its degree programs as part of its commitment to quality assurance, the University of the Philippines Visayas Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs in coordination with the Quality Assurance Committee conducted the Outcome-based Education (OBE) Lecture-Workshop last 23-25 April 2025 in Sam’s 21 Hotel, Mandurriao, Iloilo City.

The lecture-workshop aimed to deepen the understanding of faculty members of the OBE principles and apply them to curriculum design and development. Dr. Rosella M. Torrecampo, ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance-trained assessor and OBE expert from the University of the Philippines Diliman, served as resource speaker.

Unit heads, college secretaries, members of the UPV Curriculum Committee, and curriculum focal persons attended the activity.

In his opening remarks, Asst. Prof. Steve P. Janagap, UPV Quality Assurance Officer, emphasized the importance of aligning curricular programs with the principles of OBE.  With the alignment, the curriculum ensures that students achieve meaningful learning outcomes that prepare them for success in their personal and professional journeys.

On the first day, Torrecampo delivered a lecture on OBE fundamentals, including its history, principles, and alignment with the ASEAN, national, and UP System’s quality assurance frameworks. The lecture also included program design, development and issues. Participants were given the opportunity to present their program learning outcomes and have them critiqued by the resource speaker and other members of the group.

The second day focused on the practical applications of OBE principles, which included lectures on mapping outcomes, designing curriculum, aligning course learning outcomes with program learning outcomes, and aligning teaching and learning strategies and assessment methods with learning outcomes.

The third day of the activity opened with a presentation from different divisions on their teaching and learning activities and assessment. Torrecampo’s lecture covered assessment feedback and recalibration and the continuous improvement and implementation of OBE. In the afternoon, an open forum on challenges and opportunities in the OBE implementation was held.

The lecture-workshop concluded with a closing message from Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Alice Joan G. Ferrer, who thanked the faculty members for their active participation and emphasized the significance of continuously improving academic programs.
