The University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), in partnership with the Institute of Contemporary Economics (ICE), hosted a forum titled Quantum Technology: Unlocking the Future of Computing, Communication, and Sensing to Address Intractable Problems on March 27 at the UPV Little Theater, Iloilo City Campus.
Chancellor Clement Camposano welcomed guests, members of the ICE, and participants from the local government, private sector, and the academe. He emphasized the value of technology in the academe and research.
Messages of support were delivered by Ms. Aulynn B. Yue Sin and Ms. Velma Jane Lao, heads of the Local Economic Development and Investment Promotion Centers for the province and city, respectively.
Ms. Hazel Mann, founder of the SAMA Foundation, introduced the keynote speaker. She explained that SAMA stands for combined efforts, emphasizing collaborative actions to support, unite, and bring people together in times of challenge.
Keynote speaker Mr. Nardo Manaloto, Founder and Managing Partner of Qubits Ventures, introduced quantum computing and its benefits for businesses. He also discussed the need for quantum computing in computational breakthroughs, scientific discoveries, the evolution of cybersecurity, economic and sustainability impacts, and climate-friendly computing.
During the open forum, Mr. Manaloto and Ms. Mann answered questions from the audience, with moderation by Prof. Pepito Fernandez, Jr., chair of the Quantum Technology forum. Some of the topics discussed included where to begin after this forum initiative, the application of quantum technology in agriculture and academia, and the commercialization of startups.
Mr. Artemio Pama, chairman of ICE, delivered his closing message: “Together, we have explored how cutting-edge advancements in computing, communication, and sensing technologies are poised to address some of the world’s most pressing and intractable challenges.” Mr. Pama hopes that this initiative fosters potential collaboration between academia and industry, enabling the transcendence of technological boundaries and the development of solutions that are not only technologically advanced but also socially impactful.
After the forum, Mr. Manaloto and Ms. Mann met with some of the faculty of UPV and members of ICE.
