For the first time in history, UPV Debate Society bagged the national championship title for the Union Cup Grand Finals of the National Debate Championship 2022, in a 7-1-1 split last February 27, 2022, held via Discord and Zoom.
John Rey Reyes and Eljenmer Sindo from the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences emerged as the new national champions for the union cup. They were debating in Opening Opposition, as the only team from Visayas against teams from UP Baguio, San Beda University, and Saint Louis University. Reyes was also hailed as the Best Speaker of the Grand Finals.
Reyes and Sindo first competed in the seven (7) elimination rounds of the tournament, having a total score of 11 points and 1066 speaker points, breaking 7th in the union cup break of the tournament. After the seven (7) elimination rounds, the team competed in the semi-finals and proceeded unanimously in the Grand Finals. The tournament was set in a British Parliamentary Format.
National Debate Championship 2022 was composed of 107 teams across different institutions nationwide, and UPV Debate Society sent a total of 7 teams and two judges set to compete for the championship. UPVM A, composed of Ivy Pilatan from BS in Biology IV and Kimberly Nocon from BS in Economics III, was one of the union cup's reserved-breaking teams. This historic run is only the first for UPV Debate Society’s more championship titles in the future.
Reyes and Sindo, together, were also the first team from UPV Debate Society who formerly broke and debated in the EFL Grand Finals of the Asian British Parliamentary last September 2021.
