The University of the Philippines Visayas Crisis Management Committee (UPV-CMC) led the conduct of an earthquake drill for the faculty, staff, and students of the College of Management (CM), at the UPV Iloilo City campus on Sept. 12, 2024.
The drill simulated the occurrence of a magnitude 7.0 earthquake and a fire. It also included search-and-rescue operations for missing and injured people inside the CM Building. The Oblation Plaza served as the evacuation area.
Aside from CM personnel and students, the participants of the 3rd Workshop for Young Researchers – students and professors representing various higher education institutions in the country, also joined the drill. Some of the UPV personnel based at the Iloilo City campus likewise performed the “duck, cover, and hold” inside their respective offices in support of the holding of the earthquake drill.
UPV-CMC and CM received a “satisfactory” rating from Mr. Darwin Joemil Papa, Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Officer of the Iloilo City DRRMO, who served as the observer of the drill.
Along with the UPV-CMC, various teams from CM, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administration, Security Service Force, Health Services Unit, and Campus Development and Maintenance Office coordinated the drill. Prof. Ramil Atando served as the incident commander for CM.
UPV-CMC regular conducts earthquake drills to better equip its constituents to prepare in the event of an earthquake.
