A state university of Turkey is one of the newest additions to the increasing number of partner institutions of UPV-CFOS across the globe as part of its internationalization initiatives.

The cooperation between UPV-CFOS and Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University (COMU) kicked off following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of the two institutions for academic and cultural partnership on January 31, 2022.

UPV Chancellor Prof. Clement C. Camposano and COMU Rector Prof. Sedat Murat signed and formalized the 5-year agreement that includes joint research activities, exchange of faculty members, researchers, and students of the two institutions.

CFOS Dean Prof. Encarnacion Emilia S. Yap served as witness to this agreement along with Prof. Ekrem Sanver Celik, dean of COMU Faculty of Marine Sciences and Technology.

Last December 2021, UPV has entered into an agreement with another higher educational institution (HEI) in Turkey, the Isparta University of Applied Sciences (IUAS), for a similar undertaking.

The CFOS is the implementing unit under these MoUs.

For a start, UPV-CFOS is now working with the aforesaid Turkish HEIs on a project under the Erasmus+ KA171 program to exchange faculty members and students.

The collaboration with COMU and IUAS is part of a bilateral program initiated by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for fisheries and marine sciences entitled “Development and Academic and Exchange Programs among Universities in the Philippines and Turkey.”

Dean Yap, with some faculty members and researchers of CFOS, had a preliminary discussion with the representatives of the Faculty of Marine Sciences and Technology of COMU and Eğirdir Faculty of Fisheries of IUAS for potential collaborative projects in the fields of fisheries and marine sciences in a virtual meeting on November 5, 2021.

Meanwhile, the CFOS is also collaborating with Seaweed Base International Science and Technology Cooperation (SBIS&TC), China, to establish the China-ASEAN Joint Laboratory for Seaweed Research (Philippines). The UPV and SBIS&TC inked the Memorandum of Agreement on December 10, 2021.

UPV also signed an agreement on academic cooperation with the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences on November 17, 2021.
