UP-CIDS and MSU Tawi-Tawi mounts international conference on the Sulu Archipelago

The University of the Philippines - Center for Integrative and Development Studies (UP-CIDS) and Mindanao State University Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography (MSU-TCTO) in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi are mounting a historic transdisciplinary international conference, which will bring together a diverse group of scholars to discuss relevant issues, including the role of the Sulu Archipelago in the dynamics of nation-building in the region and the existing cultural, ecological, and socio-economic currents that flow through its maritime border zone today, among others. 

Slated to happen from 12-14 November 2024 in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, the international conference is in partnership with the Philippine Studies Association (PSA, Inc.), with support from the Australian National University (ANU) Philippines Institute. Joining the conference as keynote speaker is Dr. Leonard Andaya from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. 

The initial list of plenary speakers include Dr. James Warren (Murdoch University), Dr. Stephen Acabado (UCLA), Dr. Patricio Abinales (UH Manoa), Dr. Barbara Andaya (UH Manoa), Dr. Francisco Datar (UP Diliman), Dr. Richard Muallil (MSU-TCTO), Dr. Sitti Zayda Halun (MSU-TCTO), Dr. Jay Batongbacal (UP Diliman), Dr. Noel Ferriols (UP Visayas), Dr. Rosalie Arcala-Hall (UP-CIDS), Dr. Wilfredo Campos, (UP Visayas), Dr. Jilene Chua (Boston University), Dr. Nassef Manabilang Adiong (PRLS - Bangsamoro Parliament), Dr. Darwin Absari (UP Diliman), Dr. Benny Bascara (Haluoleo University), and Dr. Benjamin Vallejo Jr. (UP-CIDS). 

Atty. Angelo Jimenez, President of the University of the Philippines (UP), is set to deliver a message during the opening program. Atty. Basari Mapupuno, President of Mindanao State University (MSU), is also expected to share a message. 

UP will also be holding a panel discussion on the Archipelagic Ocean Virtual University (AOVU) during the conference. The AOVU is a flagship program of the current administration aimed towards the blue economy.

Acting as Conference Director is Dr. Clement Camposano, Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV). Working alongside him as Deputy Conference Director is Dr. Ferginil Colicol from MSU-TCTO.
