The staff of the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) University Library joined in the first quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) at the New Library, Miagao campus, on March 13, 2025.
A simultaneous countdown followed by the practice of the “duck-cover-hold” took place at exactly 3:00 pm.
The UPV Crisis Management Committee (CMC) identified the New Library as the site for simulating specific drills, like searching for missing persons and identifying victims; activating and establishing the Incident Command Post; setting up the emergency communications by the Security Service Force; and demonstrating the use of fire extinguishers.
The supplementary activities of the drill included initial response, evacuation, and headcount.
Likewise, the University Library, students, and interns participated in the demonstration on using fire extinguishers.
The drill is conducted in reference to Memorandum PAJ 25-02, stating that all UP units are enjoined to conduct their earthquake drills as part of the ongoing capacity-building efforts for disaster resilience across the UP System.
It is in line with the quarterly NSED of the Office of Civil Defense, together with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). (With sources from UPV CMC)
