The Transportation Science Society of the Philippines (TSSP), in cooperation with the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), held the 3rd Workshop for Young Researchers (WYRe) on September 12, 2024 at the College of Management, UP Visayas, Iloilo City Campus.
The workshop, as a preconference event, served as a platform for research students and academic institutions to facilitate collaboration and linkages. It aimed to impart knowledge and guidance on conducting research, with the goal of expanding students' understanding in the field of transport.
In the morning session, Dr. Crispin Emmanuel D. Diaz, a professor at the School of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP) at the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD), presented “The Importance of Research and Practical Guidance on Conducting Research.” Meanwhile, Dr. Karl B. N. Vergel, a professor of Transportation Engineering at the Institute of Civil Engineering, College of Engineering, UP Diliman spoke on “Sharing Your Research: How to Get Published.”
Both Dr. Diaz and Dr. Vergel are Research and Extension Fellows of the National Center for Transportation Studies in UP Diliman.
In the afternoon, Dr. Hilario Sean O. Palmiano, associate professor and currently the Deputy Director for Academic Programs at the UP Institute of Civil Engineering in Diliman, as well as a member of the Transportation Engineering Group, and Dr. Sandy Mae A. Gaspay, associate professor at the UP Institute of Civil Engineering, who currently heads the Traffic Engineering and Management Group of the UP National Center for Transportation Studies, conducted workshops on abstract development and research proposal development.
A panel discussion on Career Opportunities and Challenges in Transportation was held with Arch. Keith D. Cameña, Project Development Officer III of the City Planning and Development Office of the Iloilo City Government; Dr. Marie Danielle V. Guillen, associate professor at the UP Asian Institute of Tourism and Board Member of TSSP; and Mr. Raymund Jarobilla, Traffic Planner at JFJ Architects. The discussion was moderated by Asst. Prof. Ysabella P. Cainglet from the Dept. of Accounting, College of Management, UP Visayas.
The bike tour around the city, which was intended to be the concluding activity of the workshop, was canceled due to the inclement weather that afternoon.
There was a total of 63 participants, which included students and professors from Adamson University; Cagayan State University - Carig Campus; De La Salle University Manila – Gokongwei College of Engineering; UP Diliman Asian Institute of Tourism; University of the Philippines Diliman – National Graduate School of Engineering; UP Visayas College of Arts and Sciences, Division of Physical Sciences and Mathematics; University of the Philippines Tacloban College; and the City Government of Davao – Davao Public Transport Modernization Project.
