Physical Education professor from the College of Arts and Sciences, UP Visayas, Professor Fernando S. Tinagan, has participated and has proven to excel in various arnis e-tournaments as a player-coach.
Throughout 2020 and early 2021, Tinagan participated as both a player and a coach for numerous Arnis Competitions sponsored by the Philippine Escrima Kali Arnis Federation (PEKAF), International Modern Arnis Federation of the Philippines (IMAFP), and the Pro-Active Arnis League of the Philippines.
Moreover, Tinagan, along with UPHSI Grade 12 PE Arnis students, Fraulyn Marey A. Moralidad and Amiguel P. Pamplona, and UPV Library staff Mar S. Sencil, consistently garnered medals in the ARNIS Standard Anyo E-Tournaments held between December 2020 to May 2021.
Tinagan received a total of six (6) gold medals, five (5) silver medals, and four (4) bronze medals in seven different events.
Aside from competing, Tinagan was also recently invited as a speaker for an online martial arts event held via Zoom last May 2, 2021. In his talk titled “Arnis Coaches during Pandemic”, Tinagan shared his unique experiences and best practices as a player-coach during the remote learning set-up.
Tinagan is passionate about Arnis and desires to share his experiences with the UPV community. With the support of UPV Chancellor Clement Castigador Camposano, the UPV Ugnayan ng Pahinungod, and UPV Alumni, Tinagan aims to teach Basic Arnis, which is not only meant for fitness but self-defense as well.
According to Tinagan, “Learning arnis is one way of improving one’s mental health, and it is also an activity that relieves stress and anxiety”.
