More than 200 students and personnel of the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) School of Technology (SoTech) joined this year’s 4th quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) on Nov. 9.
Simulating a 7.2 magnitude earthquake, the drill took place at the SoTech Building and started at 9:00 a.m., officially taking cue from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), which led the NSED at the ceremonial site in Casiguran town, Aurora.
UPV regularly participates in the NSED and its Crisis Management Committee (CMC) identified SoTech to join the disaster-preparedness activity for this quarter.
The simulation is a multi-emergency situation which includes the occurrence of an earthquake, fire, and tsunami. There were also missing and injured people who were rescued as part of the drill.
The CMC, led by Asst. Prof. Ramil Atando, Project Development Assistant for Crisis Management, gave its post-analysis after the drill and discussed areas of improvement to SoTech personnel, particularly those involved with its DRRM. (With sources from UPV CMC)
