Madrid presents paper in Bandung, Indonesia

Dr. Randy M. Madrid, a Social Studies professor from the Division of Professional Education, was one of the Philippine representatives to the Regional Conference 2024 of the International Society for the Studies of the Chinese Overseas held on November 7 to 9, 2024, at Universitas Kristen Maranatha in Bandung, Indonesia.

Dr. Madrid presented a paper titled "Opium and Gambling in the 18th and 19th Century Iloilo: Its Implication to the Construction of Pariancillo de Molo”  which examined historical records that revealed how opium trade and card games contributed to the economy of Iloilo in the late 1700s and early 1800s. The revenue generated from these activities helped fund the construction of Iloilo Chinatown, known locally as Pariancillo de Molo, a significant cultural landmark.

The three-day conference brought together scholars from around the world to discuss the Chinese diaspora and its role in promoting progress in Southeast Asia. The event included presentations on various topics and provided opportunities for cultural exchange.

Participants also toured historical landmarks in Bandung, offering insights into the rich culture and history of West Java and Indonesia as a whole.

Dr. Madrid’s presentation not only highlighted the rich history of Iloilo but also underscored the importance of understanding local history in a global context. His participation reflected the Philippines’ contribution to international academic discussions on culture and history. (With sources from Dr. Randy Madrid)
