Assistant Professor Bobby Rodriguez presented his paper during the 15th Asian Conference on Media, Communication and Film (MediAsia2024) held at Kyoto Research Park last October 15-19, 2024. Prof. Rodriguez is a film practitioner and faculty member of the Division of Humanities under the College of Arts and Sciences and a PhD student of the Development Communication Graduate program of UP Los Baños College of Development Communication.
Prof. Rodriguez’s paper is titled “The Construction of Artistic Fulfillment and Recognition of Independent Filmmakers in Iloilo City in a Capital-Centric Film Industry.” In his presentation, he highlighted the complex landscape of artistic fulfillment and recognition experienced by independent filmmakers in Iloilo City albeit within a capital-centric Philippine film industry. He also discussed the reality of regional cinema dynamics and the importance of decentralizing resources and opportunities to support the diverse and rich cultural expressions found in regional filmmaking. He ended his presentation by recommending structural reforms to create a more inclusive and equitable film industry.
The MediAsia 2024 conference was held at the Osaka School of International Public Policy (OSIPP) at Osaka University, Japan in partnership with the International Academic Forum (IAFOR) Research Centre. The event aimed to bring together academics and scholars in order to exchange and collaborate in exploring and engaging with ideas and perspectives on media, communication, and film.
