CFOS welcomes new faculty members, REPS, students

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS), UP Visayas, welcomed the newly hired faculty members and Research, Extension and Professional Staff (REPS) during the College’s orientation at the FC Conference Room, Umali Hall, CFOS, UPV Miagao campus on August 14, 2019.

Organized by the CFOS’s Committee for Instruction headed by Prof. Mae Grace Nillos, the activity was aimed to help prepare the newest members of the teaching and research staff for their career in the University particularly in CFOS.

CFOS hired 11 new faculty members and one (1) REPS recently.  Joined by other junior faculty members of the College, they listened and participated in discussions on UP’s procedures and policies, anti-sexual harassment and policies and gender development program.

CFOS dean Prof. Encarnacion Emilia S. Yap welcomed the participants and reminded them of the things that a faculty member should know during their stay in UPV.  She also introduced the CFOS’s mission, vision and core values.

“As academics, you should know all the things that a faculty member of this University should know so that you would somehow be guided and aware of the things that are expected of you,” Yap said.

Of the 11 new faculty members, seven are from the Institute of Aquaculture (IA) namely Ms.  Cherry P. Añasco, Ms. Iris Ann G. Borlongan, Mr.  Carmelo S. del Castillo, Mr. Sanny David P. Lumayno, Mr. Fredson H. Huervana , Mr. Vince Neil B. Fuertes, and Ms. Kyle Iris C. Touzu.Two are from the Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanology (IMFO) specifically Mr. Dominique P. Mediodia and Mr. Edcel R. Sudaria likewise from the Institute of Fish Processing Technology (IFPT) particularly Mr. Leonilo F. Endoma Jr. and Ms. Josielou L. Chan.

Ms. Karmelie Jane M. Monaya is the newly-hired REPS of the IFPT.

The activity is one of the academic support initiatives of the CFOS to ensure that its faculty members are acquainted with the policies, procedures, standards and programs governing all UP constituents.

Meanwhile, the CFOS also welcomed its 192 first year and returning students for Academic Year 2019-2020 at the annual freshies’ orientation program held at the AV Hall on August 6, 2019.

Organized by the CFOS Student Council, the orientation program introduced the first year students to the different institutes, offices, faculty and staff of the College as they begin their journey at the CFOS. The upper class provided tips on how to go through and eventually survive life in the University and graduate on time.
