Representing UP Visayas, the team consisting of Vince Justin Dela Cruz and Arielle Estrella, both BS Fisheries students from the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, finished second in the recently concluded Biotechnology Quiz Bee Competition held at the Diamond Jubilee Hall in Iloilo City on November 7, 2024.
They were accompanied by their coach, Mr. Omar Adrianne Alaman. The quiz bee competition was participated in by 15 state universities and colleges in Western Visayas that offer biotechnology and science-related programs.
The contest was one of the highlights of the 9th National Fisheries Biotechnology Symposium (NFBS), a build-up activity for the National Biotechnology Week in observance of Presidential Proclamation No. 1414 series of 2007, organized by the Department of Agriculture-Fisheries Biotechnology Center on November 6-7, 2024.
The symposium aimed to promote the sustainability and resiliency of the fisheries industry in the Philippines, ensuring food security, and economic stability through the integration and application of biotechnology innovations.
CFOS faculty members, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rhoda Mae C. Simora and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Victor Marco Emmanuel N. Ferriols , were invited to speak in the plenary session.
Themed “Fisheries Biotech: Supporting sustainable and resilient fisheries industry for a food-secure Philippines,” the symposium was hosted by the Department of Agriculture-Fisheries Biotechnology Center (DA-FBC) in collaboration with the Philippine Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (PSBMB) - Visayas Chapter and network State Universities and Colleges.
