A paper published by faculty members and researchers from the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, UP Visayas (UPV-CFOS) received the Dr. Elvira O. Tan Awards of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD).
The “Utilization of marine diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii as a feed additive in seawater-tolerant Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus, Linnaeus 1758) strain” authored by Asst. Prof. Fredson H. Huervana, Cleresa S. Dionela, Eirene Dorothy S. de la Torre, Asst. Prof. Dr. Carmelo S. del Castillo, and Prof. Dr. Rex Ferdinand M. Traifalgar of the Institute of Aquaculture, was this year’s winner of the prestigious award for outstanding published paper in Aquatic Sciences Category.
The research work found that feeding of marine diatoms T. weissflogiie as a dietary supplement to seawater tilapia strains enhanced their growth performance and omega-3 composition without negatively affecting their digestive health.
Findings of the study could help boost the acceptability of tilapia in the market.
The winning paper was published in the Journal of Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems.
The Dr. Elvira O. Tan Memorial Award recognizes Filipino scientists and researchers who promote excellence in fisheries sciences through publication of their exceptional research and development results in an International Scientific Indexing (ISI)-accredited local and/or international journal.
The award was given on the 8th day of November 2024 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), Pasay City during the 2024 S&T Recognition and Awarding Ceremony and 52nd PCAARRD Founding Anniversary Celebration.
