The algal paste technology of UP Visayas College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) participated in the recently concluded international livestock and aquaculture fair held in the World Trade Center, Pasay City on May 22-24, 2024.
The algal paste, commercially known as Juan Algae Paste, was one of the featured aquaculture technologies from the UP-Institute for Small Scale Industries to exhibit in the three-day Livestock Philippines and Aquaculture Philippines 2024.
Hosted by the Department of Agriculture, the trade fair aimed to present to local farmers and fisherfolk the technological innovations and breakthroughs that could improve their agricultural production and enhance their profit.
The first locally produced ready-to-use, chemical-free, and environment-friendly feed invented by Ms. Soledad S. Garibay of the Institute of Aquaculture and Prof. Leticia Ami, retired faculty member of the Institute of Fish Processing Technology, offers alternative cost-effective and sustainable feed for aquaculture and helps ensure food security.
The microalgal paste is available in three variants: the green seawater algal paste, chlorella paste, and chaeto paste, each made for particular aquaculture commodity. The green seawater algal paste is best suited for rotifers; chlorella paste for tilapia, eels, and tropical aquarium fishes; while the chaeto paste is recommended for shrimps.
The patented product is available to customers here and around the world.
About 280 exhibitors from over 30 countries around the globe joined the international livestock and aquaculture expo this year to showcase innovation and technology to improve the agriculture economy, particularly the livestock, poultry, and aquaculture industries.
