The Institute of Fisheries Policy and Development Studies of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS-IFPDS) launched its Fisheries Policy Laboratory on 25 March 2025 at the Umali Hall (Faculty Center), University of the Philippines Visayas in Miagao, Iloilo. CFOS Dean Prof. Dr. Harold M. Monteclaro led the ceremonial ribbon cutting, together with Vice Chancellor for Administration Asst. Prof. Dr. Farisal U. Bagsit, IFPDS Director Assoc. Prof. Caridad N. Jimenez, and CFOS Coordinator for Instruction Asst. Prof. Joshua M. Regalado. Thomas Harriot Distinguished Professor for Anthropology of East Carolina University, Prof. Dr. David Griffith, along with the faculty, staff and students from the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) and the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) participated in this milestone event for IFPDS.
The IFPDS Fisheries Policy Laboratory will serve as a key support facility in teaching, research, and public service activities of the institute and the greater UPV community. The laboratory is also envisioned to be a well-equipped, modern, physical space for students, researchers, and institutional partners for formulating and co-designing policies and management strategies, training and knowledge generation, and science communication.

Vice Chancellor Dr. Farisal U. Bagsit also donated five (5) android tablets for the laboratory, each equipped with KoboToolBox as online-offline data collection tool, which can be used by students and researchers. The tablets were procured through the Emerging Inter-Disciplinary Research Program (EIDRP) titled “Impact of Covid-19 Pandemic on The Material Well-Being of Remote Small Island Barangays in Northern Iloilo”.
The launch is a sideline activity during the World Expert Lecture Series (WELS), held on 25-26 March 2025 at the University of the Philippines Visayas. WELS is hosted by CFOS-IFPDS in partnership with the UP Office of International Linkages (UP OIL).
