The College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV CAS) unveiled its improved CAS Garden during a simple ceremony held on Jan. 10, adding another learning and socializing space primarily for its students and personnel.
The CAS Garden is the last of a series of projects by CAS recently, the two of which are the CAS Sign in front of the Tomas Fonacier Hall and the CAS Park unveiled in November and December last year, respectively.
According to Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Alice Joan Ferrer, outgoing CAS Dean, the college organized a fund drive for the realization of these projects. The names of those who supported the fund drive can be found in the CAS Diamond Book released in February 2023, said Ferrer, who pushed for the said projects during her term.
The area, which has been existing since the late 1990s, now has six garden sets with parasols installed and improved path walks. It also has six lamp posts to allow activities at night, subject to the approval of the Office of the Dean.
To further add to the aesthetic, butterfly cut-outs made from recycled materials are attached to the trellis in the middle of the garden.
Ferrer personally made the butterflies herself through the years. The materials that she used were bottles, light containers, and folders made of plastic.
She also mentioned during her message that Wi-Fi will be installed soon at the CAS Garden, CAS Park, and the CAS Building.
University officials, CAS Division Chairs, former CAS personnel, faculty, and staff attended the unveiling. Present were Chancellor Clement Camposano, Dr. Arnel Tampos, College Secretary Steve Janagap, OIC University Registrar Nilo Araneta, and UP High School in Iloilo Principal Edelia Braga, among others.
