History
The CAS was originally UP Iloilo College (UPIC) established on July 1, 1947, initially with 16 faculty members, 223 students and five preparatory programs. UPIC became a full-fledge college in 1954 offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs and a four-year high school diploma. Later, UPIC changed its name to UP College Iloilo (UPCI). Upon the establishment of an autonomous University of the Philippines in the Visayas on May 31, 1979; UPIC became the College of Arts and Sciences.
Goals and Objectives
The college has the following objectives:
1. To be a source of inspiration for liberal education of schools in the Western Visayas Region and in the nation, especially through its General Education program and its humanities, social sciences, basic/natural sciences and mathematics offerings, thereby enriching the country’s educational system.
2. To be the principal source of expertise through a relevant teacher’s training campaign and its degree programs by producing competent and concerned professionals who are able to translate knowledge and skills into strategies toward national economic development.
3. To be a center for the enrichment of various professional areas in its concern, and to foster technology transfer especially in the rural areas through quality extension programs, thus contributing to the improvement of the quality of life in the region.
4. To take the lead role in research and to foster linkages within and without the country, in the natural sciences interest of the college, in the social behavioral areas, in the humanities and in fisheries related activities.
5. To be a repository of and help conserve, promote, disseminate, and propagate the various cultures of the Western Visayas Region and to develop the creative capabilities of its people in order to awaken positive values that will bring about people empowerment.
